at 6th and harrison street. we believe that the fire may have started in an abandoned victorian home on harrison street. this is right next to 880, the freeway. it is also on the same road that the posey tube comes out of. this could be causing some problems in the posey tube. it also could be causing folks to slow down on 880. these are pictures from earlier. you can see a lot of smoke. the fire initially started as a one-alarm fire but quickly went to two alarms when it broke out probably 30 to 45 minutes ago. christian is on the scene. christian, what can you tell us? >> reporter: frank, we just arrived here about ten minutes ago. let's give you a look. you can see flames still on top of this building. it is very much like what you described. it appears to be an abandoned building at harrison. traffic is shut down on harrison and on 7th street here. firefighters and police are routeing people around it. 880, as you said, looks like there is slowing traffic as people approach the scene of this fire. and then they speed up afterwards. so some rubbernecking as people try to see the s

to introduce and to introduce karen harrison who is also receiving this award tonight. karen harrison is a registered nurse and clinic manager at the native american indian center in oakland and a member from a tribe here in california. she started out as a medical assistant in 1985 with the native american health center and went on to get her registered nurse degree so she's been with the health center for 27 years and 21 of those years she has been a registered nurse. [applause] karen has greatly contributed to the native american health center and sharing her knowledge and wisdom with the whole agency and this goes out to the community as well and serves as a chair on the advisory community and board member of the friendship house and coached american indian children in the tribal athletics program and known as the coworkers as the patient whisperer and when there is a patient that is angry or agitated she is always successful in calming them down. she is a mother and her with her family tonight. can all her kids wave? and she is here with her sister and lots of friends and now

out a fire near downtown oakland. this is a three story vacant building we believe on harrison street. fire officials now say there is an injury that has been reported but they aren't elaborating on the seriousness of that injury. we don't know how the fire started or the circumstances surrounding it. the flames did break out about an hour ago, about 5:30 on a house on harrison street right next to 880. if you're going that way or pass that way, surely you saw the smoke in downtown oakland on harrison street beside 880. the home is in a thabd which is a blend of residential and businesses in the area. there are some reports of very strong odor from the fire. we'll continue to update the story as warranted throughout the newscast. >>> out in the open. women serve in combat. ask can anyone in the military. it's no secret. but until today it was against u.s. policy and that means that women were doing the work but not getting the credit. in a surprise move the pentagon enlisted a ban dating back 20 years. kris sanchez joins us with reaction. a lot of women are saying it's with about time

with a-b-c-7 news. the fire broke out at the home on harrison street near interstate 880 just before 5-30 tonight. the flames furiously burned for an hour and a half. kron-4's scott rates has been on the scene all night. and joins us now with the latest. scott? >> reporter: pam, i just spoke with the battalion chief. they are treating this as a suspicious fire. let me show you what is left of 621 harrison the firefighters are still making sure that everything else is out. this is what it looked like with our helicopter partnership from abc seven. flames were shooting out of this home they had to work quickly before it spread to any other homes. antiphon i have learned tonight that the homo was vacant. when firefighters are right to they found something interesting. it was on the roof of a home right next door. >> when we are right on the scene. this building they called and told the three people off and rescued individuals but they could have been involved in the fire. and the police department has them in custody. they are being questioned on weather or not they had anything to do wit

monitoring the situation. traffic opened up on harrison within the last hour here. we've been reporting live since 6:00 this evening. earlier, we spoke with the mother of a woman who was inside that building when it caught fire. >>> fire burst through the roof of the building on harrison street. firefighters worked to rescue the people who made it out on a neighboring roof. the fire slowed the evening commute down. crews closed down 7th street in both directions. closed harrison, and slowed traffic to a crawl. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >> the building owner is on scene. he reports that when the rain starts, people enter his building. the potential for fire is there. >> reporter: she says they planned an escape route in case of emergency. >> one of them said they were all together, and they showed each other what route, which way to go out in case of emergency. >> and it saved some lives you think. >> yeah, it did. >> reporter: her daughter was one of the people rescued on a neighboring roof, and detained by police. >> i don't think none of them started it on purpose. they
